This new issue of the journal Historein explores the increasing significance of emotion and affect in multiple interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discourses, and the political, social and cultural underpinnings of this recent shift in critical theory and cultural criticism. The essays examine what thinking about the sociality of emotions and affectivity means in terms of multiple temporalities and historical changes in local and global power configurations, colonial and postcolonial processes, capitalist political economies, national and post-national discourses, religious and philanthropic narratives, and recent biopolitical rearrangements. How can we study individual and collective emotional forces and encounters in various contexts of war, decolonization, migration and global injustice? What sites of memory, history, politics and theory are generated by such engagement with multiple configurations and re-configurations of emotion? Taken together, the essays bespeak a productive tension between the notions of “emotion,” “affect” and “social passion”; this conceptual suspension marks the epistemologies motivated by the historical and anthropological engagement with the current “affective turn.”
Themes of the essays include: strategies of writing the self in the normative contexts of emotional regulation marking the period of religious wars in France; contemporary discourses of philanthropy and the politics of emotion in postcolonial European contexts; the politics of fear in contemporary American society and the explosion of sentimentalism in public discourses; strategies of naming the other in their constitutive relation with narratives of hate in contexts of identification and subjection; mourning as constitutive to historical consciousness; the power workings of emotions in 17th century Aegean communities; the role of emotions in the emergence of new subjectivities in 18th century England; the emotional underpinnings of the construction of the Italian nation as a system of kinship; the theoretical possibilities for cultural history opened up from the study of emotions.
Overall, this compilation brings forth the ways in which the theoretical engagement with emotions in the mid-1990s, what has been identified as an “affective turn” in the humanities and social sciences, draws on some of the most innovative epistemological trends of the two last decades of the twentieth century, including psychoanalytically informed theories of subjectivity and subjection, theories of the body and embodiment, poststructuralist feminist theory, postcolonial criticism, queer theorization of melancholy and trauma.

Το νέο τεύχος του περιοδικού Historein εστιάζει στη µελέτη των συναισθηµάτων –στη διερεύνηση, δηλαδή, ζητηµάτων που αφορούν τη χρήση τους και την παραγωγή τους– στην ιστορικότητά τους, στο ρόλο τους στη διαµόρφωση ατοµικών και συλλογικών υποκειµενικοτήτων, στην παραγωγή νέων παγκόσµιων ιεραρχιών. Ακολουθώντας την ευρύτερη στροφή των κοινωνικών και ανθρωπιστικών επιστηµών στο πεδίο των συναισθηµάτων, το τεύχος επιχειρεί να συµβάλλει στην κατανόηση της ανάδυσης, της κυκλοφορίας, της επιτέλεσης και της χρήσης των συναισθηµάτων σε διαφορετικά ιστορικά και κοινωνικά συµφραζόµενα. Τα άρθρα του τόµου αποτυπώνουν την αυξανόµενη σηµασία των συναισθηµάτων στις διεπιστηµονικές µελέτες και λόγους και επιχειρούν να διερευνήσουν τη σηµασία και την κινητοποίηση των συναισθηµάτων σε τοπικούς και παγκόσµιους πολιτικούς σχηµατισµούς, σε εθνικά και αποικιακά αφηγήµατα, σε θρησκευτικούς και φιλανθρωπικούς λόγους, στο πλαίσιο του πολέµου, της µετα- και νεο-αποικιακής τάξης, της µετανάστευσης και των νέων µορφών παγκόσµιας κυριαρχίας.
Το εύρος των θεµάτων, των προσεγγίσεων και των αντικειµένων µελέτης που διακρίνει τα άρθρα αποσκοπεί στο να διατηρήσει και να ανιχνεύσει την αµφισηµία, τις εντάσεις και την πολλαπλότητα των θεωρητικών και µεθοδολογικών προσεγγίσεων αλλά και των πολιτικών, κοινωνικών και πολιτισµικών διακυβευµάτων της χρήσης και σηµασίας των συναισθηµάτων στο παρελθόν αλλά και στο σύγχρονο κόσµο. Τα άρθρα εξετάζουν τις στρατηγικές έκφρασης και γραφής του εαυτού ακόµα και στα πλέον κανονιστικά και πειθαρχικά πλαίσια της διαχείρισης των συναισθηµάτων την περίοδο των θρησκευτικών πολέµων στη Γαλλία, τους σύγχρονους φιλανθρωπικούς λόγους και τις πολιτικές των συναισθηµάτων στη µετα-αποικιακή ευρωπαϊκή τάξη, την κυριαρχία του φόβου στη σύγχρονη αµερικανική κοινωνία και την έκρηξη του συναισθηµατισµού στη δηµόσια ζωή, το πένθος ως κατεξοχήν θεµέλιο της ιστορικής συνείδησης, την καλλιέργεια των συναισθηµάτων στις κοινότητες του Αιγαίου το 17ο αιώνα και τις υποκείµενες σχέσεις εξουσίας, την σηµασία των συναισθηµάτων στην ανάδυση νέων υποκειµενικοτήτων στην Αγγλία του 18ου αιώνα, τη λειτουργία τους στη διαµόρφωση του ιταλικού έθνους ως συστήµατος συγγένειας και τέλος τις δυνατότητες που ανοίγονται µέσα από τη µελέτη των συναισθηµάτων για την πολιτισµική ιστορία.
